Alcohols, such as those produced by catalytic hydrogenation of Co, are purified by catalytic hydrogenation of Co, are purified by preliminary distillation with caustic alkali (which may be mixed with brine) followed by the addition of small quantities of a primary amine (such as aniline or its homologs) having a boiling point above the distillation temperature of the alcoholic mixture.
