A gas consisting mainly of CO and H2 is made by supplying a carbonaceous fuel, such as powdered coal, oil, together with O2, to a heated reaction chamber to which is superheated steam, with or without further fuel supply, is subsequently delivered. In an example, 12 lb. Powdered coal per min. with 8.4 lb. O2 are used for the initial reaction to produce CO, the O2 being under about 5 lb. Per in.2 pressure, and 6.5 lb. Steam per min. is delivered to the reaction chamber to meet the CO, carrying fuel particles at 2,000°-3,000°. Describes apparatus. |
