High-pressure NH3 plant at Peoria has been adapted to the production of MeOH for which purpose it is necessary to remove only a portion of the CO2 content of the fermenter gas, the reaction employed being CO2+3H2=CH2OH+H2O. Investigations are in progress for the development of a suitable process for converting the CO2 into CO in order to make use of the reaction CO+2H2=CH3OH whereby the MeOH output for a given compressor capacity may be increased 33%.
