        Catalysts made by the proper fusion and partial reduction with H2 of Co oxide effectively catalyze the water gas reaction to equilibrium at temperatures as low as 283 and space velocities of 1,800 vol. of water gas per vol. of catalyst per hr.  Adding suitable promoters, such as Fe up to 3% or Cr oxide, suppressed the simultaneous formation of CH4.  A Co catalyst containing 38% Cu was particularly active as a water-gas catalyst without significant synthesis of CH4.
