3204. SLATER, W. E. Influence of Different Surfaces on the Decomposition of Methane. Jour. Chem. Soc., vol. 109, 1916, pp. 160-164; Chem. Abs., vol. 10, 1916, p. 1589. To determine whether the amount of decomposition of CH4 in contact with heated surfaces depends upon the kind of substance exposed, or whether it is a function of the surface area only, the gas was heated to 910° at constant pressure and time with various refractory materials, the degree of decomposition being determined by measuring the amounts of H2 in the residual gases. The results showed that the rate of decomposition depends upon the nature of the heated surface. It was found that Si, MgO, Al2O3, and BaO did not accelerate the reaction and that Cu, carborundum, graphite, charcoal, and Fe did. SLIN’KO, M. G. See abs. 305. SLONE, M. C. See abs. 3100. |
