2765. RAIKES, H. R. Liquid Fuel From Coal. South African Ind. Chem., vol. 3, 1949, pp. 82-89; British Abs., 1949, B, I, p. 852. Reviews proposed production of liquid fuel from coal deposits at Vredefort, Orange Free State, by a modified Fischer-Tropsch process. The water requirements of the plant, estimated at 7 x 106 gas. per day, are high in relation to the local supply. The location of other liquid-fuel plants in catchment areas with a rainfall higher than that of Vaal Basin, is discussed with reference to the water supply and the amount and quality of the coal reserves.
