2731.     POSTLETHWAITE, J. P., BARDGETT, H., AND BONDY, H. F.  Inspection of Krupp-Lurgi Plants for the Carbonization of Coal at Low Temperatures.  BIOS Final Report 616, 1946, 41 pp.; PB 46,390.

Krupp plants at Wanne Eickel and Velsen are described.  The coke from the former plant was used for gas generation in the adjoining Fischer-Tropsch plant.  Of the 10 Fischer-Tropsch generators, 2 operated on low-temperature coke and 8 on high-temperature coke.  The coke was particularly suitable for the production of water gas as the ratio H2:CO was 1.4:1, as compared with 1.2:1 in the case of high-temperature coke.  The tail gases from the Fischer-Tropsch plant were used to heat the low-temperature retorts.  The gasoline obtained by scrubbing the low-temperature gas was mixed with that obtained from the Fischer-Tropsch plant and helped to raise the octane number.
