        By cracking lactic acid in the presence of lime and H₂O, an oil was obtained identical with that obtained by the hydrolysis of cellulose and differing from Fischer’s Synthol chiefly in containing less alcohol.  Treatment with H₂SO₄ gave hydrocarbons identical with the corresponding Synthin fractions.  Fischer and Schrader have found that lactic acid is the chief product in the hydrolysis of cellulose.
