By cracking lactic acid in the presence of lime and H2O, an oil was obtained identical with that obtained by the hydrolysis of cellulose and differing from Fischer’s Synthol chiefly in containing less alcohol.  Treatment with H2SO4 gave hydrocarbons identical with the corresponding Synthin fractions.  Fischer and Schrader have found that lactic acid is the chief product in the hydrolysis of cellulose.
