Although CO is unstable at 20°-1,000°, the velocity of the reaction 2CO=CO2+C is very small in the absence of a catalyst.  In the presence of Fe2O3 above 350°, it occurs rapidly either alone or accompanied by reduction of the Fe2O3, the velocity being proportional to the mass of the catalyst.  Fe alone acts similarly.  Similar experiments with Fe2O3, containing a phosphate or aluminate show that P2O5 and Al2O3 hinder the catalytic action of the Fe (or Fe2O3).
