                    Destructive distillation of dried wood shavings at 540° gives a large amount of tarry matter.  This can be eliminated and more volatile hydrocarbons obtained by passing O₂ into the retort, the oxidation being adjusted to give the maximum CO:H₂ ratio for conversion into Kogasin.
