        Catalytic effect of the autoclave material in the synthesis of liquid hydrocarbons from carbide under elevated pressure is discussed.  The autoclave reaction of CO and H₂ is reported to give (1) CH₄ and H₂O, (2) C₂H₆ and H₂O, and (3) CO₂ and H₂.  Reaction (3) is catalyzed by Al(OH)₃.  No liquid hydrocarbon was formed when carbide was absent.
