Catalytic effect of the autoclave material in the synthesis of liquid hydrocarbons from carbide under elevated pressure is discussed.  The autoclave reaction of CO and H2 is reported to give (1) CH4 and H2O, (2) C2H6 and H2O, and (3) CO2 and H2.  Reaction (3) is catalyzed by Al(OH)3.  No liquid hydrocarbon was formed when carbide was absent.
