        In considering the various possibilities of its chemical utilization, a survey of the present knowledge of the properties of CH₄ is made.  Its chlorination, oxidation, thermal decomposition, reaction with steam, and conversion into higher hydrocarbons are discussed.  It is believed that the solution of this problem lies within the range of high-pressure and high-temperature reactions, which are now imperfectly understood.
