                    Most active catalyst, consisting of 4:1 Ni-SiO2, loses 80% of its activity after 50 hr., while 9:1 Ni-BaO, Ni-ThO₂, and Ni-Al₂O₃ are virtually as active as at the beginning.  Coating of the catalyst surfaces with the hydrocarbons produced does not affect its activity.  All catalysts examined are instantly inactivated by O₂ in the reaction mixture.
