        CH4 undergoes exchange with D2, CD4, and D2O on active Ni catalysts at 138 and above.  At 184 the rate of reaction decreases in the order CD4, D2, and D2O.  The activation energy of reaction for CD4 is approximately 19 kg.-cal., and for D2 approximately 28 kg.-cal.  The reaction is explained by an activated, dissociative absorption of CH4 on surface areas not occupied by H-D or D2O.
