Oxidation reactions or the conversion of CH4 into synthesis gas are assuming increasing industrial importance. These reactions, in which CH4 is acted upon by O2, steam, or CO2 either alone or in binary or even ternary mixtures, are capable of being graphically represented by making use of the Gibbs triangle. When the reactions are effected in the presence of a catalyst, as is frequently the case, chemical equilibrium is quite easily attained. The author represents graphically the static conditions that may arise by thermal dissociation of CH4 in the homogeneous phase as well as in the presence of C. Some typical cases are studied, and the effect of different factors, such as temperature, pressure, relative proportions of CH4, and other reactants, is examined. MEUSEL, A. See abs. 1030, 1031. |
