CH4 pure or mixed with H2, N2, O2, and CO yields H2 and CO2 when mixed with a large excess of H2O vapor and passed slowly over the catalysts SiO2, ZrO2, asbestos sprinkled or impregnated with ZrO2, ThO2, Fe2O3, Fe2O3+10% K2CO3, or Al2O3 at 860°, 960°, 1,000°, or 1,050°.  The best results for the mixture were obtained with ZrO2.  With pure CH4 and ZrO2 at 1,050° the reaction was complete.
