        CH₄ pure or mixed with H₂, N₂, O₂, and CO yields H₂ and CO₂ when mixed with a large excess of H₂O vapor and passed slowly over the catalysts SiO₂, ZrO₂, asbestos sprinkled or impregnated with ZrO₂, ThO₂, Fe₂O₃, Fe₂O₃+10% K₂CO₃, or Al₂O₃ at 860°, 960°, 1,000°, or 1,050°.  The best results for the mixture were obtained with ZrO₂.  With pure CH₄ and ZrO₂ at 1,050° the reaction was complete.
