Fe2O3 catalyst generally used for the conversion of CO and H2O to H2 and CO2 is impaired by the heat of the exothermic reaction.  The conversion at 450° was measured with promoted Fe2O3 catalysts before and after heating to 850°.  The resistance of the catalyst to heat was greatly improved by additions of Cr2O3 and MgO.  The optimum ratio Fe2O3 : Cr2O3 : MgO was 1:01:0.03.  The catalyst obtained by precipitation with KOH was better than that with NH3.
