        Comprehensive review of previous investigations.  Discusses influence of surface improvement and composition as well as the role of promoters and of Fe carbides on the activity of the catalyst, the preparation of precipitated catalysts, the induction of the catalyst, its reaction mechanism and behavior in the synthesis, and the results of various synthesis processes.  Fixed-bed vapor-phase and liquid-phase operation is considered also.
