        Action of H2S and CS2 was studied.  Small amounts of either increased the activity of a Ni-Mn-(15%)Al2O3 (3%) (1) catalyzer but larger amounts poisoned it.  They had no preliminary activating effect on a Ni-Mn(15%)-ThO2(3%) (2) catalyzer and this was more easily poisoned.  From 16-28 mg. H2S or approximately 50 mg. CS2/gm. Ni were required to halve the activity of (2) and 54 mg. H2S/gm. Ni was required for (1).  The poisoning power of the CS2 increased directly the amount of CS2, but that of the H2S increased directly with the logarithm of the amount of H2S.  When a large amount of (1) was used H2S had no effect on it up to a certain point, after which it poisoned it in the usual way.  It was shown that excess catalyst had no effect on the reaction and that the necessary and sufficient quantity of catalyst was 2 gm. Ni when the oven temperature was 200°, the gas flow was 4 l./hr. and the volume ratio CO:H2 was approximately 1:2.  Under these conditions there was produced 135 cc. benzine/m.3 of gases used and 3.5% of the Ni was in active condition.
