MeOH is obtained in good yield by passing CO-H2 mixture over a Zn-Cr-Ni catalyst at 370°.  The gas from COMe2-BuOH fermentation contains traces of S compounds, which inactivate the catalyst; such gases may be purified by passing over active C.
