       Decomposition and synthesis investigations of organic compounds were made possible with the development of high-pressure and high temperature methods.  The reduction of CO by H₂ at atmospheric pressure with catalysts produces liquid and solid homologs of CH₄.  The formation of metal carbides appears to be an intermediate stage of the reactions involved.  A gasoline produced similarly from water gas was shown to be highly unsaturated, and several O₂ compounds were isolated.
