When Fe3O4 is oxidized at low temperature, the spinel structure is retained to form γ-Fe2O3 with a steady decrease in the dimension of the elementary cell from 8,380 to 8,322 Å. Change in intensity of the X-ray patterns and the density indicates that the increase in the O concentration produces empty spaces in the spinel lattice so that in γ-Fe2O3, where the O concentration reaches a maximum 1/9 of the original Fe atomic positions are unoccupied, and the elementary cell contains an average of 21 1/3 Fe and 32 O.
