Development of hydrogenation and Fischer-Tropsch processes has made all natural sources of hydrocarbons – natural gas, petroleum, coal, shale – available for the production of liquid fuels, of all types of hydrocarbons, C2H2 olefins, paraffins and aromatics, and of synthetic chemicals.  Application of the Fischer-Tropsch process may lead, as in the case of petroleum, to production of synthetic chemicals.  The most important products, such as plastics, synthetic fibers and detergents, made from synthetic chemicals, are being derived to an increasing extent from hydrocarbon sources.
