Economy of the synthetic liquid fuel processes is discussed.  The cost of H2 constitutes about 50% of the total cost of liquid products from the Bergius process, while the cost of synthesis gas represents 60-70% of the total cost of Fischer-Tropsch products.  Underground gasification of coal is being investigated as a lower cost method of producing gases suitable for both processes.
