Synthesis was carried out in a steel bomb lined with Cu and having a Cu insert to hold the catalyst.  The process was effected at a cold pressure of 100-150 atm. and 350°-400°.  Pure Kahlbaum CO and H2 were used containing H2, 97.2; CH4, 0.4; unsaturated compounds, 0.2; N2, 2.6; and O2, 0.3%.  Cu catalysts are not recommended, but good results were obtained with n chromates.  Among the best tricomponent catalysts were Cu49Zn43Cr8 and Cu50Zn40Bi10, the yield of MeOH amounting to 86-87% and 75%, respectively, at temperatures of 360° and 400°.  The product contained MeOH 89-92%, unsaturated compounds 2-4%, aldehydes and ketones 0.05-0.2%, and H2O and other admixtures 9-4%.  Various reactions are described.  The difficulties in determining the amount of H2O accompanying MeOH were overcome by the construction of a special apparatus, the product being treated with CaO.
