Oxides of C and water vapor have been made to react with each other by means of the light of the Hg vapor lamp.  CO and O2 produce a small amount of CO2, while the latter gas yields CO when exposed to the rays in the presence of P.  CO2 and H2 give H2O and HCHO.  HCHO can be made directly from H4 and CO.
