                  Oxides of C and water vapor have been made to react with each other by means of the light of the Hg vapor lamp.  CO and O₂ produce a small amount of CO₂, while the latter gas yields CO when exposed to the rays in the presence of P.  CO₂ and H₂ give H₂O and HCHO.  HCHO can be made directly from H₄ and CO.
