Arthur Reavell lecture.  Discusses existing processes for coal utilization – carbonization, fractionation by solvent extraction, and synthesis of hydrocarbons.  The principal defect of the latter process is its wastefulness; only about 30-40% of the coal substance is recovered in the products.
