Technical production of aliphatic compounds is a much later development than that of aromatic compounds but has already surpassed the latter and promises to surpass the production of inorganic chemicals.  Unlike the countries with large supplies of petroleum and carbohydrates, Germany is forced to use coal, CO, and H2 as raw materials.  Among several most important developments mentioned are paraffin oxidation to fatty acids and MeOH and higher alcohols.
