A cast Fe vessel was destroyed by a hot CO-gas mixture after 1 ½ yr.  The gas penetrated along pores and graphite particles, leaving deposited C.  At 550° the following reaction, catalyzed by Fe, takes place:  2CO→C+CO2.  Steel is not affected.
