Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance activity and selectivity in the oxo-process by depositing on a catalyst support consisting of silica a cluster containing at least two metals selected from the group consisting of Rh, Ir and Fe to form a catalyst.

CONSTITUTION: A composite metal cluster precursor containing at least two metals selected from the group consisting of Rh, Ir and Fe is impregnated with silica in an inert solvent. The resulting silica is then heat-treated so as to carry thereon the cluster containing at least two metals selected from the group consisting of Rh, Ir and Fe, thereby forming a composite metal cluster supporting catalyst. It is preferable for the composite metal cluster to be deposited on the silica support in an amount of 0.005-10 wt.%. The use of the aforesaid catalyst in the Fischer-Tropsch process and the oxo-process permits a high inversion rate and selectively to be maintained for many hours.
