ABSTRACT:

A number of (alpha)-FeOOH samples were prepared at differential experimental conditions and characterized by X-ray diffraction, surface area, and TEM. Precipitation of ferrous hydroxide and subsequent oxidation will produce (alpha)-FeOOH, Fe(sub 3)O(sub 4), (gamma)-FeOOH or (delta)-FeOOH depending on the experimental conditions such as (Fe)/(OH) ratio, starting iron compound, precipitation/oxidation temperature, oxidizing agent, aging, and modifiers. In the present study we have carried out experiments on the effect of (Fe)/(OH) ratio as well as the oxidizing agent on the nature of final oxidized iron compound.
