Catalysts for the production of MeOH from C oxides and H2 at elevated temperature and pressure comprise a mixture of (a) 1 or more difficultly reducible oxides of metals of groups 2 or 6, such as Zn, Mg, Cd, Cr, V and W; (b) 1 or more easily reducible oxides, such as those of Cu, Ag, Fe, Ni and Co; and (c) a metallic halide, such as chloride or bromide of Zn or Mg or chloride of Cu or Cr. Gives numerous details of preparing the catalyst mixtures.
