Preparation of acids such as propoinic, butyric, or valeric acid from steam, CO and an olefinic hydrocarbon such as C2H4, C3H6, or C4H8 is effected by reaction in the presence of a volatile inorganic acid, such as HCl, formed in situ from Cl in the preseance of activated charcoal.
