3957.  WITT, D. Desulfurizing Fuel Gases. German Patent 671,189, Feb. 1, 1939 (Cl. 26 d-8.04). Schmidt, j., Das Kohlenoxyd, Akademische Verlagsfesellschaft, Leipzig, 1950, p. 168; Chem. Abs., vol. 33, 1939, p. 3568.

Distillation gases from coal or brown coal are freed from H2S in known manner and then led through active C, whereby benzene and part of the organic S compounds are removed. The residual gas is treated with steam at 300°-500° I the presence of a catalyst to convert part of the CO into CO2 and H2 and the bulk of the residual organic S compounds into H2S. The latter is removed in known manner and the residual gas is led again through active C to complete the removal of organic S compounds. The gas may then be subjected to known catalytic treatments.
