Hydrocarbon gases, such as purified coal gas, are led with steam or CO2, with or without air or O2, over an activated catalyst in long narrow tubes which are heated externally to 600°-800° and made of resistant steel, for example, Cr-Ni steel, or of Cr-Ni alloy. The catalyst may be Ni activated with Al2O3 or MgO. The process may be effected in 2 stages.
