In subjecting hydrocarbon gases to decomposition by treatment with steam, CO₂, and O₂, or air in the presence of a catalyst, to obtain a mixture of H₂ and CO, the hydrocarbons and the steam are pretreated to remove inorganic or organic S compounds.  Gives examples.
