Heavy residues from the distillation of crude petroleum are cracked into free C and H2, the C is reacted with H2O vapor to form CO, and the CO and H2 are synthesized over a catalyst of ZnO, Ni, and platinized asbestos to form MeOH, which is mixed with the distilled fractions to form a motor fuel.
