An apparatus is specified comprising 2 retorts, to 1 of which a portion of the gas is supplied while the other retort is heated by the other portion of the gas; connections are provided for supplying steam alternately to the retorts and for supplying air alternately with the steam supply, and a catalyzer chamber is connected to the retorts and supplied with gases from them.
