PATENT

3878.  WATSON, J. R.  Retort for Effecting Synthetic Reactions Under High Pressure.  United States Patent 1,169,893, Feb. 1, 1916.  Chem. Abs., vol. 10, 1916, p. 833.

Retort described is used for the synthetic production of phenol, a-naphthol, toluene, and pyrocatechol, or for reactions with alkalies and HCl, in which high pressures are used.  The retort is formed with a seamless flask of drawn metal rotatably mounted on journals and carrying electric resistance heaters insulated from the retort itself.  The temperature is controlled by a thermostat, and a safety plug limits the maximum pressure.  Gives illustration.
