MeOH obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of oxides of C is purified by treatment with a salting-out solution, such as brine such as brine, and a solvent for hydrocarbons, such as C6H6, which is substantially immiscible with the mixture of MeOH and salting-out solution. The treatment may be effected in a distilling column. Gives various details and modifications.
