Fuel gas free from tar and hydrocarbons is obtained by gasifying bituminous fuel and passing the gas, without intermediate cooling, through a heated chamber containing a catalyst known to promote the conversion of tar vapors and hydrocarbons into CO and H2. An oxidizing agent, for example, O2, CO2, or steam, may be fed to the chambers, if necessary. Describes apparatus.
