3782. ----- [UNITED ENGINEERS & CONSTRUCTORS INC.] Water Gas. British Patent 689,762, Apr. 1, 1953. Chem. Abs., vol., 1953, p. 8997.

Gas rich in H2 and CO is manufactured from a fluid fuel in a cyclic process, which comprises: (1) Burning the fuel in a combustion chamber in 1 part of the cycle, dividing the hot combustion products into 2 streams, and passing each stream simultaneously and in parallel through a separate path, each of which comprises in series in series a 1st heat-storage zone of refractory material, a zone of reforming catalyst, and a 2d heat-storage zone of refractory material to store heat therein; (2) in another part of the cycle passing a hydrocarbon in the gaseous state and steam serially through both paths to form a gas rich in H2 and oxides of C, mainly CO, and collecting the gas; and (3) in another part of the cycle passing a hydrocarbon in the gaseous state and steam serially through both paths in the opposite direction to the 2d step, to form a gas rich in h2 and oxides of C, largely CO, and collecting this gas also. Air may also be added to the streams of gaseous hydrocarbon and steam.
