MeOH prepared from CO and H₂ is treated in the presence of H₂O with small portions of KMnO₄ and ZnCl₂. With very impure MeOH, treatment with an organic base of high boiling point—for example, a phenylenediamine or aminophenold, may follow. The mixture is then fractionated.
