In the synthesis of NH₃ a mixture of N₂ and H₂ is passed over a catalyst containing oxides of Fe, K, and Mg, which is more active than Fe alone, at a temperature 400°-700°. An Fe catalyst containing a mixed promoter comprising 1% MgO will give 25-30% NH₂ under normal synthesis conditions for relatively long periods of time. Mixed promoters comprising Li₂O and MgO. Na₂O and MgO₂, Na₂O,and CaO, or K₂O and BaO can also be employed advantageously.
