Aqueous mixture from CO and H₂ synthesis containing compounds with O₂ are extracted with liquid aliphatic hydrocarbons at 175°-300° F. and 100-300 p.s.i.  The hydrocarbon phase may then be treated with aqueous NaHSO₃ to recover the aldehydes and ketones and then with a secondary solvent, such as (CH₂OH)₂, to recover the alcohols.
