Water gas suitable for use in the preparation of synthetic hydrocarbons can be formed by vaporizing light hydrocarbons, such as mineral oils, residual oils, and gas oils, with a small amount of excess steam at temperatures of 1,200°-1,300° C. and 15-20 atm. pressure and admitting a small amount of O2 to reaction chamber.  CH4 formation is claimed be at a minimum.
