Practically CH4 free water gas low in CO2 is obtained by gasification, with a relatively small excess of steam, of liquid oils and tars, in absence of a catalyst, at >1,100° and >10 at., the temperature of reaction being maintained by the direct combustion with O2 of a portion of the fuel charge.  The steam is preferably supplied to the reaction vessel as water emulsified in the oil or tar.
