July 11, 1944; appl. filed Aug. 22, 1940, Serial No. 353,631; 2 claims (Cl. 260-449.6).  Chem. Abs., vol. 38, 1944, p. 6078.

Gas containing oxides of C and H2 is passed downwardly through a reaction zone containing fresh catalyst in its upper part and relatively spent catalyst in its lower part.  Fresh catalyst is continuously added above and spent catalyst withdrawn below.  Temperature and pressure conditions are maintained in the reaction zone adapted to produce hydrocarbons containing   more than 1 C atom per mol.  The exothermic heat of reaction is removed by a boiling liquid cooling medium, such as H2O kept in heat exchange relation with the catalyst.  A reaction zone of such height employed that the hydrostatic head of the cooling medium is sufficient to produce a pressure equivalent to the boiling temperature of the cooling medium is appreciably higher at the lower part of the reaction zone than at the top.
