3712.  SUMERFORD, S. D., AND BUCHMANN, F. J.  (Standard Oil Development Co.).  Hydrocarbon Synthesis.  United States Patent 2,541,677, Feb. 13, 1951; appl. filed Aug, 1947, Serial No. 766,180; 11 claims (Cl. 260-449.6).  Chem. Abs., vol. 45, 1951, p. 4912.

Hydrocarbon synthesis process may be improved by preconditioning the catalyst with synthesis gas H2:CO=2.5-3:1 CO for 40-200 hr.  Low yields of desired products may be expected during this period.  Following the preconditioning period, the H2:CO ratio may be 2:1 or lower, and the yield of C4+ hydrocarbons will be increased.  In fluidized operation good yields are obtained under severe conditions 600° F. and above, and H2:CO ratio 2:1 and serious disintegration  of the powdered-Fe catalyst is prevented.  5 United States patents cited.
