In obtaining a gas mixture comprising H₂ and CO in the ratio of 2:1 for the catalytic conversion  thereof to aliphatic hydrocarbons, water gas and coke-oven gas are blended with a permanent gas produced from the distillation of coal-oil mixtures.  S compounds are removed from the mixture before its subjection to catalysis; other diluents, for example, CO₂ saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons or N₂ may remain therein.
